Solventless Laminating Offers Sustainable Alternative

May 01, 2009

Richmond, British Columbia – Layfield Vision Packaging has further expanded its production capabilities with the installation and start-up of a solventless laminator at its Richmond, BC conversion plant. Layfield’s Nordmeccanica laminator is a versatile unit which utilizes low viscosity adhesives to achieve strong interlayer lamination bonds.

Solventless laminating offers many advantages to Layfield’s customers, including: improved shelf life, enhanced barrier properties, and superior physical appearance. The use of solventless laminating also eliminates concerns with the removal of retained solvents and volatiles associated with solvent-based laminations.

Ideal market applications are products where integrity of product odor and moisture sensitivity are critical and where product must be protected from solvent migration, such as foods, pharmaceuticals, spices, condiments, cereal products, and dry pet foods. The solventless laminations also are ideal for microwaveable and boil-in-bag food products such as ready-to-eat foods, rice products, and sauces.

The solventless laminating process provides many benefits, including greater versatility, better economics, and improved environmental compliance with air quality regulations. “The solventless system not only saves energy, but also provides additional benefits by eliminating solvent based storage, use of flammable materials, and exposure to and removal of volatiles and hazardous waste,” said James Davidson, Business and Technical Services Manager.

“In keeping with Layfield’s environmental policy and our commitment toward sustainability and providing a positive influence on the environment, we are pleased to offer our customers a technology that impacts their sustainable goals with a “greener” alternative.” says Layfield’s General Manager, Mark Rose.

Layfield is dedicated to reducing the impact on the environment it touches. Layfield is a leader in developing stand-up pouches and flexible packaging that reduce the environmental impact involved in producing, storing, shipping, displaying and disposing of a package versus many rigid alternatives. The impact of the smaller footprint of flexible versus rigid packaging is dramatic and Layfield has been at the forefront of innovation in this area.
